Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

I'm sorry you seem so annoyed but as you point out, this seems to be an issue cause by a Windows update.

I have explained the issue here: http://aimcosoftware.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?id=246

I am not having the same issue here, but as soon as I have any information I will post on the same topic. The phone is not dead, it has been ringing this morning, so I'm not sure what the problem is there.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Hi Andrew

Just to let you know, exactly the same problem here on Win. 10 from this morning.

Hopefully, the issue will be resolved a.s.a.p. since anyone suffering from this issue has major issues with regard to getting out orders from the 25/26/27/28th.

Thanks.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

I am sorry but this issue is not with Packing Partner and therefore it is impossible for me to fix it.

I would think that you would be safe to use it on a Windows 7 8 or 8.1 PC.

I have just had it confirmed from a few users that this does not happen on Windows 7 8 or 8.1.

Dave

You are doing the equivalent of blaming me for your car not working, when someone else has crashed into it.

Also, it did work on Windows 10 until the update from Microsoft. Roll back the latest update and it will most likely work again.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Andrew

Whilst I understand your frustration, it is probable that many of us having moved to Win. 10 do not have access to 7/8/8.1 and in any event, where do we stand on putting PP onto another PC, don't we have to pay for this?

In any event, do we want to do this when ultimately you will have to find a solution!

These things sometimes sort themselves out fairly quickly, but it is very odd your Win.10 is fine, unless you don't have the update installed and until everyone is back to work on the 4th, the full extent of the issue is probably not yet known!

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

The issue is caused by a Windows security update from last night.

Go to Control Panel > Programs and Features > Installed Updates (Found in the left hand top corner)

Scroll down until you see the update as installed on 30/12/2015, highlight it and select uninstall update.

Packing partner now works just fine!

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

You can download the trial and use that for 14 days: www.aimcosoftware.co.uk/download/ppv32release.exe

Microsoft will fairly quickly be aware of any issue in their update and will release another to fix it.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

ANDREW I HAVE REMOVED THE UPDATE AND ITS NOW WORKING  =====================HOWEVER  DOES THIS MEAN WE CAN NO LONGER INSTALL MICROSOFT UPDATES THAT KEEP OUR MACHINES SAFE AS I HAVE NOW HAD TO TURN OFF THE AUTO UPDATE WHICH IN EFFECT MEANS MY SOFTWARE WILL NOT BE AS SECURE  =================LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR RESPONSE

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Microsoft will patch it soon, turn your auto updates back on in the new year.

Uninstalling the update is a quick and easy work around.

Also, turn your caps lock off, its the equivalent of shouting and is hard to read.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Thank you Stotty.

Dave, now that this has proven to work, we can tell other users.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience but believe me that I have been in software for 30 years and the worst thing you can do is give people the wrong information.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Hi Stotty

Thank you, shame you were not on about 2+ hours ago, might have stopped some of the ranting!!

In Win.10 where do you disable the automatic updates, I just cannot seem to find the correct link?

Many thanks.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Hi

I don't believe Windows Updates can be stopped on Windows 10. There is only an option to postpone up to 3 days, unless you have them automatically apply, but either way, it forces the install after 3 days.

I have used System Restore to rollback to before the update and it is working again for now. But Windows Update will surely apply the update again.

I can do this as a temporary measure for now.

I realise Microsoft has caused this, but would really appreciate if Andrew is able to download and install the Windows Update that I linked to earlier and see if he can find a software-based workaround as not everyone will have the ability to rollback updates, and at the moment it assumes Microsoft will fix this problem. After all they have fixed a security vulnerability, which may be fundamental to this problem, so an alternative solution may need to be found to achieve the software functionality required. At least we can understand what causes the problem. At the least I would hope it is possible to catch the exception to prevent the application from completely crashing and handle it gracefully.

Thank you

Nick

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Hello Nick

Just disable them for the next few days, by the next update Microsoft will almost certainly have fixed this issue, as it will not be confined to Packing Partner.

I will install the updates and see if there is a workaround, but the message implies that Microsoft have left some debug information in their update (not an uncommon error), once that is removed, the issue will be fixed.

Just to explain: programs contain error 'traps' that ensure when they encounter an error, it is handled safely. When you test a program you often remove these traps, to see what is happening. If the traps are not put back before an update is released, this type of error occurs.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Good point, as the error indicates, it would seem Microsoft may have left a debugger command in the code to force debugging to start, which you won't be able to get around unless you can somehow avoid that code completely, which may be too fundamental to the workings of PP, but maybe possible it could be a minor feature that may not impact everyone if it were possible to disable it. Unlikely, but possible I guess.

Thanks

Nick

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

My vote of thanks to Stotty for a practical and positive approach - PP now is now working again for me.

Quote from a chat with Microsoft - "Thank you for raising that up. I'll do my best to help. However, we do not support any third party programs. In this case you would need to contact the developer of the Packing Partner because it could be that the program will need to be updated for Windows 10 to work properly."

They did go on to say - "For any bugs reported cause by Windows 10 update is currently under investigation and will roll out fixes in the Windows Update."

and more from my chat

Me
Thank you - if aimcosoftware (with their limited resources) are unable to fix this issue how long must we wait for a further update from yourselves?

M'soft representative
They will file a ticket directly to us so that it will be prioritize and Microsoft will roll out patches into your system to fix the bug for the application.

M'soft representative
You may also contact our Pro Support at 800-936-5800 | 800-936-4900 for any Business related concerns.

I hope Andrew/Microsoft can remedy this within a reasonable time as I don't wish to leave my system without updates for too long.  Meanwhile Stotty seems to have provided a working solution - many thanks.

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Guys if its any help for those of you concerned about switching off automatic updates on Windows 10.

Go to your control panel, find the system update KB3132372 and uninstall it.

BEFORE restarting your system visit the following link

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3073930

and download and run the windows hide update utility.

Choose to hide the following update:

Security Update for Internet Explorer Flash Player for Windows 10 Fixed Version 1511 for x64-based Systems ( KB3132372 )

Restart your system.  This lets your system continue updating automatically whilst preventing the update causing the problem from running.

Thanks

Iain

Re: Packing partner crashing since windows auto update

Hi Iain

Thank you for your post, very helpful as the update I uninstalled on 31/12 was back again on 01/01 and Ad-Lister was not working.

Should be fun on the 4th if there is no fix from MS by then.

Regards

JR
